SymptoMap (“the app”) is a private symptom diary built around a map of the body, published by Baron Mobile Games (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what information the app handles, why, and what choices you have. It applies to the SymptoMap Android application distributed through Google Play.
What you record about your body is health information, and it stays on your phone. There is no account to create, no server to sync to, and no way for us to read your entries. The app does show advertisements — non-personalised ones only — and our advertising provider collects some device data to deliver them. That is the only data collection involved, and it never includes anything you record in the app.
The app saves the following locally, in its own private storage:
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your profile: the name you want to be called by, and which body map to show (male or female) | Greeting you, and drawing the right body map |
| Your symptoms: the body area and side, or an overall symptom such as fatigue, sleep, nausea or fever; an optional type (pain, stiffness, numbness or tingling); each severity rating from 0 to 5; an optional note; the time of day; the date and time you logged it; and whether the symptom is still active or has passed | The diary itself — your history, insights, patterns and report are built from these |
| Daily check-ins: whether you marked a day as all good, or logged something that day | Counting good days and keeping your streak |
| Your progress: experience points, level, current and longest streak, streak-freeze tokens and earned badges | Showing your progress in the app |
| Your reminder settings: whether the daily reminder is on, and at what hour | Scheduling the reminder |
This data is written to your device’s private app storage. It is not transmitted to us or to anyone else, and we have no way to read it. There is no account, no login and no cloud sync — apart from loading advertisements, the app works completely offline. Uninstalling the app deletes all of it permanently.
One thing sits outside the app: if you have turned on Android’s own device backup, Android may include the app’s data in the backup it keeps in your Google account, so that your diary can be restored on a new phone. That backup is made and managed by Android and Google on your behalf; we cannot access it. You can turn device backup off in your phone’s backup settings.
Symptoms are sensitive, and we treat them that way. No body area, symptom, severity, note, check-in, streak or any other value you record is ever sent to our advertising provider, used to select an advertisement, or transmitted off your device by the app. The part of the app that requests advertisements has no access to your diary.
Advertisements are also kept away from the moments that matter: none is ever shown while you are logging a symptom, on a symptom’s history or detail screens, or on the report and its PDF.
The app has one notification: a daily reminder to check in. It is on by default at 20:00, and you can change the hour or turn it off in Profile. On Android 13 and later, your phone asks for permission to show notifications when you finish setting up the app; if you do not allow it, no reminder is shown.
The reminder is scheduled locally on your phone. It is not a push message: nothing is sent from a server, and no one is told that a reminder fired or whether you acted on it. It greets you by the name you entered, and like any notification it may appear on your lock screen — but it never contains anything you have logged. Turning the reminder off, or deleting all your data, cancels it.
The Report screen summarises your entries for a period you choose. If you tap Share PDF, the app turns that summary into a PDF on your phone and opens Android’s share sheet. The report then goes only where you send it — an email, a messaging app, a file — and that destination’s own privacy practices apply to it. It contains your name, the period covered, the symptoms and body areas you logged with their severity and duration, and your notes. We never receive a copy.
Each PDF you create is kept in the app’s private temporary storage (its cache) until Android clears it, or until you uninstall the app or clear its storage.
Profile → Clear all data deletes all your symptoms, history, check-ins, progress and profile at once, and cancels the reminder. It cannot be undone. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage from your device settings (Settings → Apps → SymptoMap → Storage → Clear data), removes everything, including any report PDFs still in the cache.
Because we keep nothing anywhere else, that is a complete deletion — there is no copy on a server for us to remove, and nothing for you to request from us. A device backup you have turned on in Android is kept in your own Google account, as described above.
SymptoMap is free and is funded by advertising. We use Google AdMob to display a banner on the Insights and Profile screens, and an occasional full-screen advertisement after you save a log — at most once per app session, and never before your third log of that session. Nothing in the app is locked behind an advertisement.
The app requests non-personalised advertisements only, for every user in every country. Non-personalised advertisements are chosen from the context they appear in and your general region, not from a profile of your interests or of what you do in other apps. The app also limits advertisements to content suitable for general audiences.
To deliver and measure these advertisements, Google may collect and process:
| Data | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Device identifiers: the Android advertising ID and app set ID | Delivering advertisements, limiting how often you see the same one, measuring how advertisements perform, and preventing fraud |
| Device information (model, operating system, language, screen size) | Selecting an advertisement that fits your device |
| Approximate location, derived from your IP address | Serving region-appropriate advertisements and applying local law |
| Interaction data: app launches, taps, and views of advertisements | Measuring advertisement performance and preventing fraud |
| Diagnostic data about the app and the advertising library, such as launch time and responsiveness | Keeping advertisements working reliably |
This data is collected by Google, not by us. We only receive anonymous, aggregated reporting such as the total number of advertisements shown. Google’s handling of it is governed by its own policies:
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, the app shows a consent form the first time you open it, provided through Google’s User Messaging Platform. It asks whether Google and its advertising partners may store and access information on your device, such as the advertising ID, and for which purposes. You may refuse; the app works exactly the same either way. Whatever you choose, SymptoMap still requests only non-personalised advertisements.
You can change your decision at any time from Profile → Ad privacy options. That option appears only where the consent form applies.
Everywhere in the world, you can limit advertising tracking through your device: Settings → Google → Ads (on some phones, Settings → Privacy → Ads), where you can delete your advertising ID.
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
INTERNET, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE | Downloading advertisements. Nothing else in the app uses the network |
AD_ID, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_AD_ID, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_ATTRIBUTION, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_TOPICS | Access to the advertising ID and to Android’s ad-measurement APIs, used by Google AdMob as described above. Added by the advertising library, not by the app itself |
POST_NOTIFICATIONS | Showing the daily reminder. Requested when you finish setting up the app, because the reminder is on by default |
VIBRATE | Letting the reminder vibrate, if your phone’s notification settings call for it |
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED, WAKE_LOCK, FOREGROUND_SERVICE | Delivering the reminder reliably: re-arming it after your phone restarts, and letting scheduled work finish while the screen is off. Added by the notification and advertising libraries. They carry no data anywhere |
com.google.android.c2dm.permission.RECEIVE | Added by the notification library so that apps can receive push messages. SymptoMap never registers for push messages, so nothing is ever received through it |
READ_APP_BADGE and the icon-badge permissions of several phone makers (Samsung, Huawei, OPPO, HTC, Sony and others) | Added by the notification library so that apps can show a number on their icon. SymptoMap never sets one |
BIND_GET_INSTALL_REFERRER_SERVICE | Added by a system library that can tell an app how it was installed. SymptoMap never reads it |
DYNAMIC_RECEIVER_NOT_EXPORTED_PERMISSION | An internal permission the Android support library defines for the app’s own use. No other app can hold it |
That is the complete list, read out of the release build rather than written from memory. The app does not request access to your contacts, camera, microphone, location, photos or files.
There are none. The app contains no analytics library and no crash reporter, so we receive no usage statistics, no session data and no crash reports containing your information. What we can see is limited to the anonymous, aggregated figures Google Play and AdMob show every developer.
SymptoMap is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, please contact us and we will address it.
Because we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to export or erase on request. To exercise rights relating to data collected for advertising — including access, erasure, or objection under the GDPR — please refer to Google’s Privacy Policy, which describes how to make such a request. You can delete all locally stored data at any time as described under Deleting your data above.
If this policy changes, the revised version will be published at this address with an updated date at the top. Significant changes affecting how data is handled will also be reflected in a new app release.
